Preventive Health and Safety Training is offered via Zoom and is designed to meet the 8-hours of California Emergency Medical Authority (EMSA) state licensing requirements for child care.

How many hours of training do I need for my California Childcare License?
To meet the California EMSA (Emergency Medical Services Authority) requirements, first-time licensees must complete a total of 16 hours of training. This is broken down into:

8 Hours: Pediatric CPR and First Aid (4 hours each).

8 Hours: Preventive Health and Safety Practices. Note: We offer these courses at our Sacramento and Yuba City locations to ensure you meet the state-mandated hourly requirements.

Can I take my childcare CPR and First Aid training entirely online
No. For childcare licensing in California, your Pediatric CPR and First Aid training must include a hands-on skills assessment. While the American Heart Association (AHA) offers “blended learning” (online lecture + in-person skills), online-only certificates without a manikin skills check are not accepted by Community Care Licensing (CCL). At Hopewell CPR, we provide the necessary in-person testing to ensure your card is valid for your license.
How often do I need to renew my EMSA certifications?
Pediatric CPR & First Aid: Must be renewed every two years.

Preventive Health and Safety: This is typically a one-time requirement for your license. Note: Effective January 1, 2026, all renewals must now include updated instruction on Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine auto-injector use (AB 2317). Our 2026 curriculum is fully updated to include this new state requirement.

Do I need an "EMSA Sticker" on my certification card?
If you take your training through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross, you do not need an EMSA sticker. These organizations are recognized by name in California law. If you take training from an independent provider, always ensure they are on the EMSA-approved list and provide the official sticker. As an AHA-affiliated site, Hopewell CPR provides nationally recognized cards accepted by all California licensing evaluators.
Who is required to be certified at a childcare center?
Under Title 22 regulations, at least one director or teacher with a current 16-hour certification must be on-site at all times. If that person is absent, another staff member with at least the Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification must be present. We recommend training your entire team to ensure you are never out of compliance during breaks or staff illnesses.
